The Rising of the Shield Hero (盾の勇者の成り上がり Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari) is a Japanese light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi. Originally published as a web novel, the series has since been published by Media Factory with illustrations by Minami Seira. As of January 25th, 2017, 16 volumes have been published. The novel series was. Light novels, short Japanese novels mostly aimed at a young adult demographic, are often the inspiration for anime series, and hardcore fans inevitably want to read the original source material. But the obvious problem with translating LNs, as opposed to anime or manga, is the pure amount of text involved.

I saw. All of those were quite successful animes so its no terrible surprise. I think they might be starting to figure out there's a link between successful anime and what will be a successful LN.
Ironically the reverse of Japan. I think it's Kyoto Animation that publishes and produces the anime for said LNs. Kyoukai no Kanata, Hyouka, and Free! were all like that, from what I understand.
Well in Japan anime have the highest production costs, while here LN's have the highest cost since they have to translate it all (right?)
I don't think it's it. I think it's about what sells.
In Japan, they ride a lot of buses and trains. That means a lot of downtime (where they're not even allowed to use their phones!). They have a lot more time to read short books like LNs and manga.
Here, though, we have a whole generation that isn't all that interested in books, and since we don't have a whole lot of people riding trains, about the only place that has a captive audience for books would be the airport. Here, anime sells more because Americans have a habit of plopping their butts in front of televisions. ^^;;; Also, much easier to make a lot more money on anime (assuming production costs are similar, it's a lot cheaper to burn three or four disks than it is to print a book)

Interesting list of author David Mitchell's 5 favorite Japanese novels. I wasn't familiar with any of these, but they sound good.

I read two of these. The Woman in the Dunes and The Housekeeper and the Professor. Really good. Woman in the Dunes is surreal but I felt was a poignant statement about Japanese social order.
The Professor and the Housekeeper was really touching and haunts me a bit. Not depressing like a lot of literature but bittersweet. Can't say the same for all her other works though.
I heard of the others but they are in my to-read pile though Doctor's Wife is closer to the top of the list. ;)

Yep. I think the company was pretty much formed to be an international distribution branch for Time of Eve. Given the quality of the blu-ray movie release & extras I'm confident about them treating/translating the light novel well.

Yen Press has picked up another round!
Durarara!! is getting a translation, along with the amazing (and two of my favorites) Strike the Blood and Black Bullet!
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/...
Also, it seems Yen Press has a very active twitter account and makes a lot of announcements on that, so if you want the lastest news from them follow them at https://twitter.com/yenpress

July 2015 is so long to wait for Durarara!!, but that was my one of my most wanted series, so I'm thrilled to hear that! That's very nice news for a Monday morning.
*Edit* So... I forgot that this was 2015. ^^; That's not actually much of a wait at all!

I hadn't even known that Strike the Blood was a light novel series. That sounds awesome. I enjoyed the anime, so I've got high hopes that the LN series will be even better.

I share your sentiment. The anime was great, kind of like a more ecchi Index in a lot of ways. I just hope the LN doesn't spend forever talking about boobs.

I don't know about a more ecchi Index. I mean, Kamijou got into a lot of ecchi situations. I think A Certain Magical Index had more nudity in it than Strike the Blood did.

Have you guys heard that you can read online the novel BEATLESS (Satoshi Hase, illustration: redjuice) and Ninja Slayer (Bradley Bond, Philip Ninj@ Morzez) legally in Tokyo Otaku Mode?
I just knew it myself and just checked the chapters' link wondering if they're all free. So far and till now, I suppose they are.
BEATLESS looks good, haven't read any works from Satoshi Hase but I'm especially fond of redjuice's artworks.
I think Ninja Slayer's anime adaptation is in the works by Studio Trigger. So I'm curious too.

The BEATLESS official web site (Japanese site) introduced the English edition a year ago.
http://beatless.jp/blog/2014/01/post-...
It said that the English edition on Tokyo Otaku Mode was a serial with the contract until May 2014, and the last chapter is '2014.06.18 UPDATE' and also the official twitter tweeted about this on April 2014 and it is last, so I think the serial is now suspended.
(I am surprised that redjuice is the illustrator of Loups-Garous Japanese edition.)

Thank you Fanta for the clarification :)
I happened to know it from an old news page too actually, just sharing in case some haven't seen it.
And anyway, Kizumonogatari and Seraph of the End are licensed by Vertical!
Kizu is planned for November, while Seraph is for December.
For you who haven't seen the monogatari series anime or never heard about it, Kizumonogatari is actually the third novel in release order in the Monogatari light novel series, but chronologically it's the first (prequel).
I'm not sure why Vertical licensed this title before (hopefully) Bakemonogatari, well the thing is I guess those who haven't read/watch Bakemonogatari can read it without (much?) spoiler :)

I've been so excited for this. ^_^ I'm fine with the set, but Baccano is the real prize here. I read the first one fan translated on my first Kindle, and it's the reason why I got so entrenched in light novel stuff. I'm really looking forward to the official release! It shall look lovely on my bookshelf.

Bento Books posted on Twitter today that Quantum Devil Saga: Avatar Tuner 2 will be coming out during the summer. This is good news as it was originally hit with delays two years ago(!) and most fans had given up hope on ever seeing it!

As a Shin Megami Tensei fan, I'm really excited about this one. :)

Oops, just realised I hadn't updated this in a little while! There's been various announcements for light novels in the last month!
1) Yen On announced Goblin Slayer: Year One, Reborn as a Vending Machine, Now I Wander the Dungeon, A Sister’s All You Need, I’ve Been Killing Slimes for 300 Years, and The Hero and His Elf Bride Open a Pizza Parlor.
2) Seven Seas announced Toradora!.

It is nice to see the Seven Seas partnership continue with J-Novel club on Clockwork Planet and I think Arifureta.
So many reincarnation titles from Yen Press / Yen On. They've definitely started stepping outside of their comfort zone for licenses with so many properties that don't have an anime.

Hi Melissa, would you mind posting this in the promotion folder instead of the news thread? This thread is for news, not promoting your books.
We did get some new news yesterday from Vertical. They're publishing a Seven Deadly Sins side story (?) book and also Girls in the Dark novel.

He has realized his approach in three distinct streams. First, in a smattering of standalone novels, he examines actual events, personages, and mythologies of premodern China. Second, in his ongoing fantasy series The Heroic Legend of Arslan, he transplants ancient Persian history into a kingdom of his own design.
